Permanence
We hold rather than trade. Without a fund clock, we can let good businesses compound and give difficult ones the years they need to turn.

Sterling Capital Holdings exists to own good businesses for a very long time. Everything else — structure, process, people — follows from that single commitment.
Three beliefs that decide what we buy, how we hold it, and when we walk away.
We hold rather than trade. Without a fund clock, we can let good businesses compound and give difficult ones the years they need to turn.
Every investment is underwritten from the loss case upward. Conservative leverage and simple structures are how we make sure a bad year is never a terminal one.
Management own equity, the group's people invest beside our partners, and nobody at Sterling is paid for activity. We are paid when the businesses are worth more.
A holdings company is judged differently from a fund. There is no vintage year to hide behind and no final close to reset the scoreboard — the portfolio simply is what we have chosen to keep.
That changes the questions we ask. Not "what will this be worth to a buyer in four years?" but "would we be content to own this outright for the next twenty?" Most opportunities fail that test, and we are comfortable saying no far more often than yes.
For the businesses that pass, we bring the balance sheet, the governance and the patience that let a good management team execute a plan without renegotiating it every reporting cycle.
The people closest to the customer make the operating decisions. We set the capital plan, the reporting cadence and the board, then stay out of the way.
We test every decision against how it reads in ten years. That filter removes most of what passes for opportunity and leaves the handful of things worth owning.
In private markets the best deals come by referral. Behaving well through a difficult year is the most valuable investment we can make in the next one.
"The first question is never how much we might make. It is what we are prepared to own."
This principle guides every allocation, every board seat and every exit.
